More Birthday Yummies!

I really enjoyed putting together this space and computer birthday combo.    I used Americolor Gel Coloring in Bright White to make the stars on the space cookies.   

And two more sets of Paw Patrol cookies.  The characters are piped with hand painted details using Americolor Gel Coloring.

A silver unicorn cake this time. Silver, gold - I LOOOOVE all the unicorns!!!!

Peppa, Jojo, LOL, Mickey, Paw Patrol, and Color Crew

Still baking up oodles of character cookies over here!  Paw Patrol has been my #1 kid request for 2018 so far.  Can't wait to see what the littles are asking for next!

Just in love with this custom Peppa Pig Birthday Invitation by Ashlynn Elliff Designs.  It was the inspiration for this Peppa and Strawberries birthday cookie set.  Always fun to mix it up a little bit!

Until I was asked to make Jojo Siwa cookies, I had absolutely no idea what this was.  Still not sure.... but I'm told that the cookies were a hit!

 

The sweet birthday girl only wanted one LOL Doll cookie - the GOLD one!

More customized Mickey Ears.  This time we decorated them to match the Mickey's Clubhouse characters.  Each one customized with a guests name.  We also included a little ombre Mickey smash cake.

Seriously, I am pretty burnt out on Paw Patrol right now.  Alas, I have to make yet another Paw Patrol set this weekend. 

I have never seen this cartoon either.  Color Crew cookies for one of the cutest little kiddos I know.

Kiddie Cakes

 Birthday cakes are always more fun when they're for little ones.   They get soooo excited to see their favorite characters turned into cake!  Here are a few character cakes from March including: Octonauts, Spongebob and Paw Patrol.

Simple DIY Tornado Costume

I don't sew.   I don't like to spend a great deal of time on homemade costumes and projects.  Pretty much all DIY costumes I make are put together with a hot glue gun!

Here's how I made a quick and easy tornado costume for my little guy last year:

What you'll need:

Tomato Cage (I used the larger size)
Wire Cutters
Pool Noodle 
Tulle
Felt or Fake Snow (I used the pieces of snow that you can find around Christmas time)
Hot Glue Gun
Packing Tape or Duck Tape
Ribbon
Spray Paint

1.  Cut the tomato cage to the appropriate size.  Remove the bottom pieces - you don't want the metal portion of this costume to come down past the bum, so that your child can still sit and walk.  Cut off top rows of cage based on height of child.

2.  Cover sharp edges.  Slice open pool noodle on one side and cover top ring.  This covers any sharp areas and also makes a shoulder cushion.  Use tape to secure pool noodle.   I covered the bottom ring with bubble wrap.  Use tape to secure bubble wrap.

3.  Add shoulder straps if needed.  I found that the open area at top was just a little too wide to rest on my son's shoulders properly.   I added two pieces of 1" ribbon across the shoulder area.   Just time eem' and knot em'!

4.  Cover outside of cage in felt.  Use hot glue to secure.  Add more felt as needed to create your "fluffy" tornado shape. Use hot glue to secure.  I didn't use fill here because it is harder to secure with hot glue.  When making the bottom part of the tornado, put it only in the front so that the child can still move their legs.   Cut arm holes after covering.

 

5.   Wrap cage in tulle and secure with hot glue.  Wrap, wrap and wrap some more.  Until you've achieved the spinning tornado look.

6.  Spray paint entire tornado.  I used a little black to get the grey color.

7.  Add details (optional).  We grabbed some farm animals from the dollar tree and hot glued them to the tornado.

 8.  Put it on and SPIN! 

Tada!  You have a Tornado Costume!

100% Edible Cookie Fidget Spinner - IT SPINS!!!!!!!!

Yes - it is a 100% EDIBLE, 100% COOKIE FIDGET SPINNER THAT REALLY SPINS!!!!!

COOKIES YOU'LL NEED:  (1) Fidget Spinner Shape, (2) Circles (you can use the cut outs from the middle of fidget.  (1) Smaller Circle, but slightly thicker than the fidget cookie

 

**The first time I made these I custom cut the dough with a knife, but this round my husband shaped a 4" metal cutter into the fidget shape.  (Be careful, cutters are very sharp and can cut skin easily)  My dough expands a little when baked so the circles all expand a little bit.  If you have a dough recipe that expands too much, your fidget shape will likely not hold up.  If you have a dough recipe that does not expand at all, you'll need to make sure your circle cookies are slightly larger than the circle opening in the fidget base.  My cookies are usually pretty soft, but I baked these slightly longer to ensure they were sturdy enough.

I did not cut small circles in arms of fidget.  I felt that the structure would hold up better when spinning if it was solid.  To add dimension, I marked off my circles with a piping tip and painted them with black food coloring prior to icing.

 GLUE THE SMALL CIRCLES TO ONE OF THE LARGER CIRCLES.  Allow time to dry fully.

DECORATE your fidget base and the other half of the small circles.  Anything goes here!  Decorate in your favorite colors and designs.  Allow time to dry fully.

 ASSEMBLE:  Place the large and small circles under and through the fidget opening.  Add royal icing only on small circle and glue top on fidget.  You do not want the icing to touch the sides of the fidget or it will NOT spin.  (See the video above for more detail on this step)

Finally finished packing up the last of the Valentine cookies (yes, a day late.)  My kids have several parties taking place at the end of the week.  So much pink!  Time to get these out of the way and make room for all the fun stuff coming up including: Trolls, Big Hero 6, and Tie Dye - So. Much. Fun.

If you're looking to get some cookies done quickly, here's a few speedy tips: 

• Stick to 1 or 2 layers.  You can get these done in 1 day by avoiding long periods of dry time.  To add some fun to the design include some wet on wet icing patterns.  Same dry time, but a more detailed design.
• Limit your icing colors.  It can get overwhelming quickly when you use too many.  Choose 3 - 4 colors to work with.  
• Skip the fancy borders.  Especially if these are heading off to the youngsters' class. 
• Use an edible marker.  When it comes to the details you can skip the piping bag and grab an edible marker.  Same adorable little details - much quicker and easier on the hands.

HAPPY VALENTINE'S DAY!

 

Ok, so this isn't really for Valentine's Day, but it did have a pink blanket.....

I made my very first cat cake!  More specifically a sleepy kitten in a basket cake.    Everything was edible (this little kitten is fondant) except the little guys whiskers.  The basket itself is actually piped buttercream that I gently painted with food coloring.  Hope you like him...or her.  This little kitty doesn't have a name.
